Best Investments for Physical Activity
To make a real difference, we focus on what works.
Our Best Investments approach helps us prioritise actions that are proven to increase physical activity, reduce inequalities and improve health across Dumfries and Galloway.
Our journey
In 2017, Dumfries and Galloway published its first Best Investments for Physical Activity report, developed with the University of Edinburgh Physical Activity for Health Research Centre (PAHRC). It set a clear, evidence‑based direction for local investment.
Since then, programmes have grown, partnerships have strengthened, and our understanding has improved.
Why we updated it
In 2025, we refreshed the Best Investments work — again drawing on national and local evidence — to:
- Review what has worked since 2017
- Recognise new and emerging approaches
- Respond to today’s challenges, including inactivity, long‑term conditions and ageing
- Directly shape the new Dumfries and Galloway Physical Activity Strategy
The update reflects a system‑based approach, recognising that lasting change comes from services, communities and organisations working together.
How this supports the Strategy
The updated Best Investments work helped us:
- Focus on actions with the strongest evidence
- Strengthen prevention and early intervention
- Improve access to inclusive, local activity opportunities
- Embed physical activity into health and social care
- Scale up approaches like the Active Lives Pathway
Why it matters
This approach helps us:
- Invest wisely
- Focus on long‑term impact
- Support more people to move more, live well and stay independent
It’s about less guesswork and more of what works.
