Dumfries and Galloway Physical Activity Strategy 2025 – 2030
Helping everyone in Dumfries and Galloway be more active, more often.
Why this matters?
Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to boost health and wellbeing across all ages. Our local strategy sets targets to reduce inactivity by 15% and to increase adults meeting muscle‑strengthening guidelines by 2030.
- 15% relative reduction in inactivity (children and adults) by 2030.
- More adults meeting muscle‑strengthening guidance by 2030.
- Whole‑system approach across 8 connected areas – from schools and workplaces to transport and health and social care.
What the strategy means?
We’re taking a whole‑system, place‑based approach that makes active living the easy, normal choice – where we live, learn, work and receive care. The strategy is built on collaboration, equity, rurality, community voice, evidence‑based action and sustainability.
Focus areas: children and young people, adults and older adults, least active first, strength and balance, rural and urban communities.
Why collaboration matters?
No single organisation can solve inactivity on its own. Progress depends on shared leadership and community‑led action, from transport and planning to schools, health and social care, employers, sports clubs and community groups.
- We prioritise those who are least active and face barriers to participation.
- We embed muscle‑strengthening and balance, key for healthy ageing and independence.
- We design local places and spaces to make walking, wheeling and moving easy every day.
